In Allande, historical heritage abounds: Celón Church, Cienfuegos Palace or the San Chuis Hillfort, for example, and the Asturian essence is preserved with extensive ethnographic heritage such as the Braña del Campel, Braña de Is, old water mills, “cortines” (circular stone structures to protect against attacks, mainly from bears), and numerous “hórreos” and “paneras” (Asturian granaries on stone pillars).
The natural beauty of Allande is completed with the passage of the Primitive Way of St. James, through which there are up to three different stages, with the famous Los Hospitales variant standing out, considered one of the most challenging and beautiful on the Way.
Furthermore, the municipality’s skies got the Starlight Foundation’s special certificate for astro-tourism thanks to the low light pollution and the orography of the terrain favouring stargazing.
The municipality’s capital is a small and welcoming village with a unique charm framed by the so-called “Indiana” architecture, which leaves a trail of eclectic, colourful and sumptuous houses all over the place. The Emigrant Monument, the Church of San Andrés and the Chapel of El Avellano also deserve special mention. Finally, the river Nisón flows through the town, leaving numerous bridges and promenades in its wake.
Allande and its inhabitants lived intensely in Prehistory and the Ancient Ages, and this is attested by the San Chuis Hillfort, testimony to the Metal Age, and also to the Roman occupation in pursuit of the ‘gold fever’ that the Empire experienced in the area. The Middle Ages are represented by the imposing Palace of Cienfuegos, which spreads its power over the capital of the council, a friendly and open village where you can enjoy the gastronomy, culture and traditions.
Furthermore, Allande is a land of extraordinary agricultural and livestock wealth, a land of great farmhouses and one of the cradles of the best Asturian veal, a land of great protected spaces where you can experience nature in its purest state, and a land of brave people who travelled overseas and the fruit of cultural fusion on the other side of the ocean is the Indian architecture and culture that the municipality exudes, some examples of which can be seen in the council’s capital itself.
