Asturian cider thrives here, with the municipality being rich in both cider presses (“llagares”) and apple orchards (“pumaradas”), further supported by the presence of the Regulatory Council for the Asturian Cider PDO. Additionally, the municipality hosts the headquarters of the “faba” PGI for Asturian beans, and it’s renowned for its delectable seafood from the Port of Tazones, featuring a diverse array of fresh fish and shellfish.

Throughout the municipality, you’ll find a multitude of “sidrerías” (cider bars), bars, and restaurants. Notably, the fishing village of Tazones excels in its fish and seafood specialities, while the capital of Villaviciosa places a strong emphasis on cider consumption and the delights of cider gastronomy.

Home to one of the most significant concentrations of Romanesque temples in northern Spain, the Monumental Complex of Valdediós lies just 11 km from Villaviciosa. It encompasses the pre-Romanesque church of San Salvador “El Conventín” and the Romanesque Monastery of Santa María la Real.

The coastal path of the Camino de Santiago (St. James’ Way) crosses the municipality. There’s also a crossroads, offering you the option to follow either the Coastal Way or the Primitive Way.

A diverse cultural program, which is mainly free, takes place throughout the year at the Riera Theatre in Villaviciosa. Similar events also occur at the Ateneo Obrero. Furthermore, the municipality hosts a myriad of popular festivals in nearly all its villages, and notably, the following events have earned the distinction of being declared Festivals of Tourist Interest in the Principality of Asturias:

Villaviciosa combines the serenity of the Asturian countryside with outstanding connectivity and services, all set against a backdrop of breathtaking natural beauty and abundant resources, which provides an excellent quality of life.

Ease of communications. Both the major cities (Avilés, Gijón, and Oviedo) and Asturias Airport are located within half an hour or less from Villaviciosa.

The meaning of its name is linked to the concept of fertility, and the truth is that this municipality lives up to the etymology of its name.
The capital of the council, Villaviciosa, home to one of the oldest Holy Weeks in Asturias, has a very pleasant historic quarter, where you can see palaces and emblazoned houses, and where you can contemplate, for example, the Romanesque church of Santa María de la Oliva…
because this municipality has interesting examples of Romanesque architecture, such as San Juan de Amandi or Santa María de Lugás, and of Pre-Romanesque architecture such as San Salvador de Valdediós, an impressive combination of church and monastery.

Among the natural beauties, the Ría stands out, where you can go bird watching and observe the biodiversity and where you can also practise all kinds of nautical sports based in the Port of El Puntal and where it is common to see canoeing training sessions, due to the great tradition and quarry that exists in the area in this speciality.

A trip along the estuary takes us to the pontoons of the El Gaitero cider factory, one of the oldest in Asturias and which, along with many other wineries (Llagares) in the municipality, is open to visitors. The Rodiles beach – a surfing icon -, the village of Sietes with its old granaries, or the Way of St. James, are other places of interest for tourists visiting this corner of the Cider Shire.
