Piloña has an extensive and well-preserved natural environment, surrounded by mountains, sierras and peaks, which makes it a favourite destination for mountain activities. It has three important population centres, L’Infiestu, its capital, Villamayor and Sebares.
In the town of Infiesto, the traveller will find the shrine of the Virgen de la Cueva, located on the banks of the river of the same name, whose first written testimonies date back to the 16th century, although there are legends that go back several centuries. Recently restored, the site has a large recreational area. In L’Infiestu we also find the Casa del Tiempo (House of Time), which offers visitors a journey through the history of watchmaking, with more than 100 clocks and 500 timepieces from different periods and origins.
A visit to the apse of Santa María de Villamayor, part of the old abbey dating from 1003 and declared a national monument in 1931, is a must.
In Sebares we find the church of San Pedro and in the parish of Sorribes, the church of San Pablo and the Palace of Sorribes from the 16th and 17th centuries respectively and historically linked to the Counts of Peñalva.
A unique ethnographic site awaits us in Espinaréu, one of the largest concentrations of granaries in Spain, and the starting point for numerous mountain routes, such as the one that leads to Pico Vízcares, the highest peak in the council at 1420 metres above sea level.
We also have several protected areas, such as the Sierra del Sueve, home to the mythical Asturcón, where this horse, unique in the world, lives in complete freedom. In August, the Fiesta del Asturcón, declared to be of National Tourist Interest, is held in the sheepfold of Espineres, where the branding of foals and exhibitions of various traditional sports and activities take place.
In Borines/Boriñes is located the Cueva del Sidrón, of great archaeological and paleoanthropological importance, the natural wealth of the area led it to be declared a Partial Nature Reserve.
Piloña is the capital of the hazelnut, this fruit is part of the identity of our council, which celebrates an important annual festival dedicated to this traditional resource.
