| Recreational areas | Polaúra It is a Protected Landscape situated in Campa L’Arquera, within the Santa Bárbara / Santa Bárbola valley. The viewpoint provides information about the stunning mountain views and the diverse environmental biodiversity. La Camperona It is accessible from the AS-338, starting in L’Entregu / El Entrego and heading towards Bimenes until you reach the turn-off leading to La Pola Siero. La Camperona is part of the Cocañín parish and is situated approximately 8 kilometers from L’Entregu / El Entrego. It is accessible from L’Entregu / El Entrego via the AS-338 in the direction of Bimenes, until you reach the turn-off leading to La Pola Siero. Llantero This recreational area is located less than two kilometres from El Entrego and can be reached by the road to L’Acebal. The valley, traversed by the Otariz stream, was once a settlement area featuring manor houses owned by the descendants of Bernaldo de Quirós. There is a hermitage in the surrounding area. |

| Green spaces and forests | La Güeria Valley Although it is not part of the Protected Landscape, the valley of La Güeria is another of the municipality’s natural spaces that is worth visiting The river Silvestre, a tributary of the Nalón, flows along its slopes, with its mouth in the vicinity of Carrocera. This is the beginning of the valley itself, which can be reached from L’Entregu / El Entrego along the AS-17 road, which joins the council with Bimenes, or by taking the AS-338 junction with the SI-12 towards La Camperona. In Carrocera you can visit the ancestral home of the Argüelles family. It is a building with the typical Asturian manor houses. It preserves remains of carved stone in jambs and lintels, as well as old chestnut beams and ashlar on the walls. On the same property there is a “panera”, with its carved stone “pegollos” on top of walls topped with good ashlars, and a chapel dedicated to Santo Domingo, with a bell-shaped arch and pilasters with imposing capitals and a quadrangular floor plan with a vaulted roof. The valley can be explored by means of a path through the old mining railway trench through which coal was brought down from the Encarná mines, which runs along the banks of the Nalón, with a gentle slope and low difficulty, which can be covered in 45 minutes. This path runs near the former HUNOSA Pozo Venturo mine, which ceased operations in 2010 and has since been transformed into a park and a sports track. It is situated on the site where the old coal washhouse of the La Encarná mines once stood. Further up is the parish church of Nuestra Señora del Sagrado Corazón, whose foundation stone was laid, according to the engraving, in 1957. In La Güerta there is a mill that forms part of a group of stone houses, stables and an “hórreo” (granary), which are typical Asturian farmhouses. From this point to La Encarná it is only a few minutes on foot to reach the high point from where we can see the carved stone walls over which the road runs and which were built for the route of the San Martín – Lieres – Gijón – Musel railway line, which never came into operation. |
| Protected natural areas | Santa Bárbola Valley The Valley of Santa Bárbara / Santa Bárbola is made up of different population centres such as La Cruz, Perabeles, Los Caleyos or La Colladiella, which can be reached from Sotrondio via the AS-337 Sotrondio-Urbiés road. Due to the diversity and richness of its flora, with an abundance of oak, chestnut, beech and birch forests, the conservation of its pastures and a native fauna that includes Egyptian vultures, wild boar and birds of prey, the valley of Santa Bárbara / Santa Bárbola has been considered a Protected Landscape since 2002, together with other territories in the municipalities of Laviana, Llangréu /Langreo and Mieres. The entrance to this protected area can be made on foot or by car from the neighbourhood of El Pontón, in Sotrondio. From this point, visitors can join the path that will take them to the Alto de La Colladiella, which runs parallel to the river and follows the old route of the mining railway that once transported coal from the La Cerezal mine shaft to the La Hullera washhouse. In addition to this green trail, the Protected Landscape of the Santa Bárbara Valley /Santa Bárbola has many other attractions for tourists, such as the water mills of Veró, Salvadora or Perabeles, the Cerezal Well, the mouth of Práu Molín or the monument to the miner of Santa Bárbara, as well as granaries, fountains and washing places that are scattered throughout the territory. Among the festivities celebrated in this valley are the festivities of El Pote, the last weekend in August, and the festivity of Santa Bárbara / Santa Bárbola, patron saint of miners, on December 4th. The municipality is structured around a series of valleys and mountain ranges whose waters flow into the river Nalón, which crosses the central part of the council in a south-east to north-west direction. The upper part of the municipality is located in the protected landscape of the Cuencas Mineras de Asturias. The average altitude reached by the council in its flat areas is 340 metres, as opposed to the 1000 metres of the mountain ranges that serve as boundaries. |

Known as the “Dolmen de la Mesa de los Moros”, it stands as the most prominent feature of the Neolithic tomb necropolis catalogued in the Archaeological Charter of Asturias. This necropolis is situated atop L’Españal, dividing the valleys of La Güeria de Carrocera and Blimea.
Adjacent to the dolmen, an undiscovered 6,000-year-old burial mound was found in 2016, comprising two burial chambers from the early 4th and 3rd millenniums, making it the largest Neolithic burial mound in all of Asturias.
The industrial bridges of the Nalón, along with the mining shafts (“bocaminas”) and headframes (“castilletes”), constitute the most captivating structures within the industrial heritage of San Martín del Rey Aurelio.
Puente La Oscura / La Oscura Bridge
It was built in 1928 by the engineer Juan de la Torre Boulín. This bridge replaced the Pontón bridge, in the same location, which had been repeatedly washed away by the river’s waters.
Puente de Carrocera / Carrocera Bridge
The Carrocera Bridge, also referred to as ‘Puente Les Chapes,’ is an iron bridge constructed in the 1930s by the Duro Felguera company. It was utilized by the Ferrocarril del Norte railway to transport coal from the Carrocera washhouse.
Puente del Miramar / Miramar Bridge
The Miramar Bridge was built just a few metres from La Oscura Bridge in L’Entregu / El Entrego, as part of a project by the Sociedad de Ferrocarriles de San Martín. This project aimed to transport coal extracted from the upper Nalón basin through the Carrocera valley to Lieres and ultimately to the port of El Musel in Gijón / Xixón.
Puente de Los Gallegos / Los Gallegos Bridge
Its name is derived from the stonemasons who crafted its pillars. This bridge, built at the start of the 20th century by Fábrica de Mieres, was commissioned in 1921. It formed an integral part of the Santa Bárbara / Santa Bárbola branch of the Llangréu / Langreo Railway Company, serving the Laviana-Sama line. Its primary purpose was to facilitate the transportation of coal extracted from the left bank of the Nalón River in Sotrondio, from the loading bay owned by Duro Felguera located in El Pontón.
Puente de La Maquinilla / La Maquinilla Bridge
The La Maquinilla Bridge was built over the Nalón River to link the Rimadero mining operation, which was overseen by the companies Elorduy and Herreros Hermanos, with the railway branch that provided access to Santa Ana mines in L’Entregu / El Entrego.
The mine shafts serve as historical evidence of the initial advancements in mining and are associated with the extraction of mineral deposits found in the mountain slopes. In the case of the horizontal shafts, they marked the earliest forays into underground mining operations.

Traditional architecture:
The municipality boasts a wealth of ethnographic heritage in the form of centuries-old “hórreos” and “paneras” (raised granaries), which can be found dispersed across the area. In Sotrondio we can find “hórreos” in El Rimaderu, Sanfrechoso and El Pontón. In L’Entregu / El Entrego, in La Revenga, next to the farmhouse located at the foot of the site of the former parish church of San Andrés.
In the valley of La Güeria there are several constructions in La Güerta – a group of granary, house and mill – La Cabaña, Cocañín, El Pullíu or La Llonga. In the village of Perabeles, nestled in Santa Bárbara/Santa Bárbola valley, there is a collection of five “hórreos”, each adorned with rosette-shaped reliefs on their doors and crowned with arches. Additionally, at the heart of the village, there is a “panera” featuring two intricately carved doors, solid one-piece corners, and abundant decorative elements.

Valley of the Nalón on all four sides, San Martín del Rey Aurelio overlooks the river and the mine. It is one of the areas with the most shafts and mining history, and the Museum of Mining and Industry (MUMI), located in L’Entregu/El Entrego, a pioneer in Spain in this type of facility and very close to the historic San Vicente shaft, which in the 1920s was the first in Spain to be self-managed by a mining union, is a good example of this. Very close to this facility is the Pozo Sotón, the only coal mine in Europe that offers guided tours of the interior, which also has a Centre of Experiences and Memory of Mining.
Mining has marked the course of events over the last century and there are many vestiges of industrial archaeology and architecture typical of an era in L’Entregu/El Entrego, as well as in Sotrondio – Pozo Sotón – and Blimea. The natural and rural environment surrounding these towns is part of the Protected Landscape of the Cuencas Mineras and offers hidden places where you can enjoy a cider or a typical Asturian recipe, such as the ones you can enjoy at the Fiesta de les Cebolles Rellenas in L’Entregu/El Entrego, Fiesta de los Pimientos Rellenos in Blimea or the Fiesta de los Nabos de Sotrondio (all of them declared of Tourist Interest), and then to wash down this ‘hypercaloric’ diet there is always the option of a long walk along the banks of the Nalón or a hiking route amidst the castles and mining villages.
